What the letters mean
The DPM is a four-year doctoral degree from a college of podiatric medicine, followed by a hospital-based residency of about three years and a state licence. It is not an MD or a DO, and podiatry is licensed under its own board in every state.
A DPM diagnoses, prescribes, orders imaging and performs surgery within the foot, ankle and related structures - an anatomical limit each state defines. Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons work the same territory from a medical degree.
