What the letters mean
A DMD is awarded after four years of dental school, followed by licensing examinations and a state licence - the same route as the DDS. Some dental schools award one and some the other, and a school may have changed which it awards without changing its program.
So the letters are a fact about a dentist's school rather than about their scope, specialty or seniority. In any dental list DDS and DMD should be treated as one population, and the specialty codes are what separate a general dentist from an orthodontist or an oral surgeon.
