What is a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist is a dentist with a specialty residency in the dental care of children, including children with special needs.

In plain English

Pediatric dentistry is a recognised dental specialty covering infancy through adolescence. The residency adds child development, behaviour guidance, sedation, and care for patients with medical complexity or disability.

General dentists see children too, and in much of the country they are the only option, so a pediatric dental list is not a list of everyone who treats children. It is the specialty-trained part of that population.

The specialty is concentrated in metropolitan markets and in group practices, and it carries a large share of publicly insured paediatric dental volume - which is worth knowing before a campaign is priced. Practices are frequently multi-site and run under a group name rather than the dentist's own, so the employer on a record is often the better handle.

Training and credentials

A DDS or DMD, a two-year accredited pediatric dentistry residency, a dental licence, and commonly specialty board certification.

Where they practise

Single-specialty children's dental practices, group dental organisations, hospital dental departments, community and school-based programs.
