What is an endocrinologist?

An endocrinologist is an internal medicine physician who sub-specialises in hormones and the glands that produce them, including diabetes care.

In plain English

Endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism is an internal medicine fellowship. The field covers the endocrine glands - thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, parathyroid, gonads - and metabolic conditions, of which diabetes is by far the largest in volume.

It is a small specialty relative to the demand on it, which is why so much diabetes care is delivered in primary care and by nurse practitioners and physician assistants working alongside endocrinologists. A list aimed at diabetes care that contains only endocrinologists will be a fraction of the real prescribing population.

Pediatric endocrinology is a separate fellowship taken after a pediatrics residency, and it is filed under its own code on the public record.

Training and credentials

Medical school, an internal medicine residency, a two-year endocrinology fellowship, then board certification.

Where they practise

Hospital and health-system specialty clinics, multi-specialty groups, academic centres, and a diminishing number of independent single-specialty practices.
