What is a hematologist-oncologist?

A hematologist-oncologist is an internal medicine physician trained in both blood disorders and cancer, usually through a single combined fellowship.

In plain English

Hematology and oncology are separately certifiable, but most American training programs combine them, so the same physician covers blood disorders and solid-tumour cancer care. The record reflects the combination unevenly: some file a combined specialty, some file hematology alone, some medical oncology alone.

The work is medical rather than surgical or radiation-based. Cancer care is delivered by a team in which the surgical oncologist and the radiation oncologist are different specialists with different training, so a list that says only oncologists will mix all three.

Practice has consolidated into hospital cancer centres and large independent oncology groups, in part because of how infused drugs are bought and billed. The employer on one of these records is usually more informative than the address.

Training and credentials

An internal medicine residency, then a combined hematology and oncology fellowship of about three years, with board certification in one or both fields.

Where they practise

Hospital cancer centres, large independent oncology practices and their infusion suites, academic cancer centres.
