What is a gastroenterologist?

A gastroenterologist is an internal medicine physician who sub-specialises in the digestive tract and the liver, and who performs endoscopic procedures.

In plain English

Gastroenterology covers the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, gallbladder and liver. It is a procedural specialty as much as a medical one: endoscopy and colonoscopy are the day-to-day work alongside clinic consultation.

Hepatology - liver disease - is a further sub-specialty within it, and transplant hepatology is a distinct certificate. Surgery on the same organs belongs to general and colorectal surgeons rather than to gastroenterologists.

Because the procedures can be done outside a hospital, gastroenterology has more endoscopy and ambulatory surgery centre ownership than most medical specialties. Practices are often larger and more consolidated than the specialty's headcount suggests, and the practice is usually the account rather than the individual.

Training and credentials

An internal medicine residency, a gastroenterology fellowship of about three years, then board certification.

Where they practise

Single-specialty groups with their own endoscopy centres, hospital divisions, ambulatory surgery centres, academic centres.
