In plain English
The family population focus is the nurse practitioner equivalent of family medicine: all ages, continuing care, wide scope. It is the most commonly held NP certification and the one most likely to be found in primary care, urgent care and retail clinics.
It is a specialisation beneath the nurse practitioner classification on the public record. A list filtered to the classification includes family nurse practitioners along with every other population focus; a list filtered to this single code excludes the rest.
Because the certification is deliberately broad, the employer and the practice setting tell you more about what one of these clinicians actually does day to day than the code does.
Training and credentials
An RN licence and nursing experience, a master's or doctoral family nurse practitioner program, then a national family certification examination.
Where they practise
Primary care, urgent and retail clinics, community health centres, rural practice, specialty clinics.
Family nurse practitioners on the public record
