What the letters mean
The letters sit on a graduate degree - a master's or a doctorate - plus a registered nurse licence and a national certification in a population focus such as family, adult-gerontology, pediatric or psychiatric-mental health. Fuller forms appear on records too: APRN for advanced practice registered nurse, or a certification such as FNP-BC.
What an NP may do without a physician depends on the state, which grants full, reduced or restricted practice authority. The credential is the same everywhere; the scope is not, and that is the single most important thing to know before working a national NP list.
