What the letters mean
A CRNA is a registered nurse with critical care experience who has completed a nurse anaesthesia program - entry to the profession has moved to the doctoral level - and passed the national certification examination. They administer anaesthesia for surgery, obstetrics and procedures.
Anaesthesia in the United States is delivered by a care team, and the CRNA is often the clinician present throughout the case. Whether a CRNA practises independently or under an anesthesiologist's direction depends on state law and on the facility.
CRNAs are among the highest-paid nursing roles and are concentrated in operating rooms and procedure suites, so an anaesthesia audience built only from physician records is missing much of the profession.
