What is an anesthesiologist?

An anesthesiologist is a physician who manages anaesthesia and a patient's physiology during surgery, and who also works in pain medicine and critical care.

In plain English

Anesthesiology is a hospital and procedure-based specialty: the work exists wherever operations and procedures happen. Sub-specialties include critical care, pain medicine, cardiac, obstetric and pediatric anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia is delivered by a care team in most of the United States. Certified registered nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants provide a large share of it, under models that differ by state and by facility, so an anaesthesia audience containing only physicians is a minority of the people at the head of the table.

The specialty is contracted and consolidated to an unusual degree. Large staffing groups hold hospital anaesthesia contracts, which means the employer on one of these records is frequently a national group rather than the hospital where the work is done.

Training and credentials

Medical school, a four-year anesthesiology residency, then board certification; pain medicine and critical care are further fellowships.

Where they practise

Hospital operating rooms and intensive care units, ambulatory surgery centres, office-based surgical suites, pain clinics.
