What is an allergist or immunologist?

An allergist-immunologist is a physician, trained first in internal medicine or pediatrics, who sub-specialises in allergy and disorders of the immune system.

In plain English

Allergy and immunology is one of the few fellowships open from two different residencies: internists and pediatricians both enter it, and many practices see adults and children in the same clinic. It has a classification of its own on the public record, which makes it easier to count exactly than most sub-specialties.

The work is clinic-based and test-heavy - skin and blood testing, immunotherapy schedules, and the long-term management of asthma and allergic conditions shared with primary care.

It is a small and unevenly distributed specialty. Many smaller markets have very few, and coverage is often provided across several satellite sites by a single practice, so practice-level data matters more here than headcount.

Training and credentials

An internal medicine or pediatrics residency, a two-year allergy and immunology fellowship, then board certification.

Where they practise

Office-based allergy practices with satellite sites, hospital and academic divisions, some pediatric groups.
