What is a neurologist?

A neurologist is a physician trained in conditions of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles, and does not operate.

In plain English

Neurology is a residency of its own rather than an internal medicine fellowship. On the public record it shares a classification with psychiatry: the two are filed together beneath psychiatry and neurology, even though they are separate trainings and separate professions.

Neurologists diagnose and manage. The operating is done by neurological surgeons, a different specialty with a much longer residency. Vascular and interventional neurology, epilepsy, neuromuscular medicine, movement disorders and sleep medicine are fellowships taken after residency.

Because the classification is shared, a count of psychiatry and neurology is not a count of neurologists. The sub-specialty codes are what separate them, and both populations are large enough that mixing them changes an addressable market by a factor rather than a margin.

Training and credentials

Medical school, then a year of general clinical training and three years of neurology residency - four in total - then board certification.

Where they practise

Hospital stroke and neurology services, neurology groups, infusion and neurodiagnostic clinics, academic centres.
