What is a plastic surgeon?

A plastic surgeon is trained in reconstruction and in cosmetic surgery, and the two halves behave like different businesses.

In plain English

Plastic and reconstructive surgery covers reconstruction after cancer, trauma or burns, hand surgery, craniofacial work, and elective cosmetic procedures. The training is one specialty; a given practice usually leans one way or the other.

The reconstructive half is hospital work, referred and insured. The cosmetic half is elective, marketed directly to the public, often paid out of pocket, and frequently done in an office-based surgical suite the surgeon owns. A list that treats the two as one audience will misread both.

Cosmetic procedures are also performed by physicians from other specialties and by advanced practice providers, so plastic surgeons are not the whole aesthetics market - they are the part of it with plastic surgery training.

Training and credentials

Either an integrated plastic surgery residency of about six years, or general surgery followed by a plastic surgery fellowship, then board certification.

Where they practise

Hospital reconstructive services and cancer centres, academic departments, private cosmetic practices and office-based surgical suites.
