What is a radiologist?

A radiologist is a physician who interprets medical images, and in interventional practice performs image-guided procedures.

In plain English

Diagnostic radiology is a reading specialty covering plain film, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, ultrasound and nuclear medicine. Interventional radiology is the procedural half, now trained through a pathway of its own, and radiation oncology is a separate specialty that uses radiation to treat rather than to diagnose.

Radiology's working location and its filed address often differ. Reading can be done remotely, teleradiology groups cover many hospitals from few places, and a radiologist may be credentialled at facilities in several states. Practice address is a weaker signal here than in any other specialty.

The specialty buys and specifies heavily - imaging equipment, contrast, reading software and machine-learning tools - and those decisions sit with the radiology group and the hospital imaging service rather than with the referring physicians.

Training and credentials

Medical school, a year of general clinical training and four years of diagnostic radiology residency, then board certification; sub-specialty fellowships usually add a year.

Where they practise

Hospital imaging departments, independent imaging centres, teleradiology groups, academic departments.
