What is a urologist?

A urologist is a surgeon of the urinary tract in both sexes and of the male reproductive system.

In plain English

Urology is a surgical specialty with a large office-based component: catheter and scope procedures, stone management, cancer surgery of the prostate, bladder and kidney, and continence and fertility work. Robotic surgery is used heavily in the field.

The kidney is shared ground with nephrology, and this is the distinction that catches list builders out. Nephrologists manage kidney function medically and supervise dialysis; urologists operate on the urinary tract. Separate specialties, separate training, separate codes.

Urology is an ageing and undersupplied specialty concentrated in metropolitan areas, and much of it has consolidated into large single-specialty groups that run their own imaging, pathology and radiation services.

Training and credentials

Medical school, a urology residency of about five years, then board certification; oncology and other fellowships follow.

Where they practise

Large single-specialty groups, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centres, academic departments, cancer centres.
